One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Game Review
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Game Review: The story of the popular straw hat pirate Monkey D. Luffy is without question the king of Japanese anime and manga culture. The iconic gummy man has come a lot closer to his goal of becoming king of the pirates since 1997, but there are still a few big fish to conquer on his journey.
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Game Review
Five years after the predecessor, we can finally plunge into the current events of the anime and manga template and face two of the four feared emperors of the one-piece seas: Big Mom and the “Beast King” Kaido, who is the strongest Living thing of the universe applies.
Musou developer Koei Tecmo promises some innovations with the latest spin-off that should refresh the somewhat dusty Musou game principle: exciting boss fights, new playable characters, and of course much larger opponents than ever before. But how well does it work? And do the changes manage to take the Pirate Warriors series to a new level?
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4
The story of Strohut Luffy is the most popular and successful manga of all time. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 we are promised the best moments in the entire one-piece story. We can once again dive into the first big “Arc” around Crocodile, Princess Vivi, and Alabasta, then rescue Nico Robin from the clutches of the CP-9 in Water Seven and experience for ourselves the events on the Sabaody Archipelago – before and after the two-year-old Time jump of the action.
However, we do not play all the events ourselves, the newest branch concentrates more on all the highlights of the past 20 years. That is quite nice, but about 80 percent of the missions in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 have already been worked through extensively in the predecessors and therefore not very attractive for fans of the series or the anime.
However, the remaining mission’s score with (for the Pirate Warriors game series) pretty surroundings and creative mission ideas. Apart from that, they of course also benefit greatly from their topicality. The series has never been so close to the events of current manga editions.

So the whole “Whole Cake Island” arc around Big Mom is playable, but also the events in the samurai country Wa No Kuni, which confront us with none other than Kaido. The two places are very different from their previous surroundings. On Whole Cake Island, for example, trees are constantly in our way, forcing us to use alternative paths. That doesn’t sound very exciting. For the very simple game principle of the Pirate Warriors series, this brings a little more dynamism. In addition, the background music in the new missions is a lot better than in the rest of the game. It is exciting to finally reach Wa No Kuni and cause chaos.

This is also a nice addition. Almost the entire environment can be blown through the area and so we as players get great feedback for the abnormally strong attacks of our characters. And that’s pretty good, One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 offers many new characters.

Finally, fan favorites like the Vinsmoke siblings are part of the playable one-piece characters. As usual for the genre, a new part primarily means new playable characters. In addition to Big Mom and Kaido, there are also fan favorites such as Katakuri or Vinsmoke siblings. So the title always has a lot of content. If you want to unlock each character and complete the storyline, it takes about 40-45 hours of play. At first, it sounds like happy faces.
That is partly true, but first of all the expectations should not be too high and the brain in standby mode. How so? Because apart from the strength of the series, the knocking out of thousands of opponents, not much really remains. The presentation of the story is tiring and minimalistic.
While efforts were made to capture the popular “one-piece flair”, the stale animations and the mushy-looking graphics make it difficult to enjoy the game. This is probably not surprising for connoisseurs of the series, but a little disappointing in 2020. One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Game Review.

As exciting and emotional as the many events are, in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 hardly any of these moments have the same or even comparable power as the moments in the template. It also has to be said: If you are new to the one-piece universe, you will understand very little about the plot. There are lots more to read under One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Game Review.
Characters are thrown into the room too often without an outsider being able to establish a context. The glossary that can be found in the main menu is useful for getting closer to small details, but let’s be honest: also pretty boring. A more creative and simply nicer presentation would have helped the entire gaming experience enormously. But the focus for fans is of course not the staging and the plot, but the fun giant battles and the many different characters.
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4: Brainless Piracy
The bigger the characters, the bigger the destruction. Kaido should be at the top of the table in both respects. Everyone knows that the heart of Musou titles is the many different characters. One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 does a particularly good job. Of course, this is partly due to the creative one-piece universe, but also due to the good implementation of the characters.
The examiner offers a total of 34 game characters, all of which are divided into four different classes: power, speed, technique, and sky. Our protagonist Monkey D. Luffy naturally belongs to the strength class. Ship chef Sanji, on the other hand, is actually a type of the speed class, but no longer after the two-year jump.
Then Sanji changes into a sky class due to his iconic “Sky Walk” fighting style. Each character plays differently. Big Mom and Kaido cause absolute chaos just because of their height, which can hardly be compared to a battle in which we choose the little Tony Chopper, for example. You can get into each character very nicely and create your very own style. The fun skill system helps enormously.
The skill trees in One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 are one of the great strengths. You can really feel the development of the characters over the course of the game. On the one hand, we have a treasure map with which we can improve the skills of all heroes, but we also have individual maps for each character.

How well we complete a mission determines our win of berries (money in one piece) and coins, which we then get. These can then be invested in the different treasure maps. This gives us a very good sense of how the characters are gaining strength over the entire game period. Over time, we always unlock new special attacks.
Luffy still uses his “Gear 2” in the first few hours as an ace up his sleeve, later we even slip into the dreaded forms of the “Gear 4 Snakeman” or the “Gear 4 Boundman” at the push of a button From this point at the latest, a mission in One Piece becomes a monstrous beating. Here fans should have a lot of fun with One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4.
One Piece Pirate Warriors 4: Who needs progress?
The outfits in One Piece are a big disappointment. Nobody should expect a lot here. Pity! Unfortunately, there is also a lot of frustration. We are disappointed with the character models, which have hardly felt that they have evolved since the first part. Large developments are looked for with a magnifying glass.
Since the first part of the series, in addition to attacks, we can also carry out a “provocation”. They look very nonsensical in battle and are often simply disappointing. While it is still good for Luffy, who puts on his iconic straw hat, or Garp, who throws his coat, it is strange and out of place for other characters. Why is Nami wearing glasses in the middle of a battle? Whoever has the answer is officially asked in the comment section (thanks!).

We are also disappointed with the few outfits in the game. In 20 years of One Piece, there were a few and a little more variety would have been nice. Luffy still has most of the clothes there, but the somewhat less well-known members of the straw gang are strikingly empty-handed. And to emphasize that again: We have already pointed out the weak development in the character models, which makes the outfit choice of Koei Tecmo raise even more question marks.

The boss fights bring variety to the dusty gameplay, but the camera also makes them very tiring. The annoying camera is also disappointing. It doesn’t matter what character we choose. Large or small, we simply don’t see it on the screen too often. That will be particularly annoying with the new boss fights. It is hardly possible to keep an overview. You are getting a piece of good information on One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 Game Review.
But in the end, it doesn’t matter in the entire game, as long as we knock on the buttons. You are rarely really challenged. If you don’t get the perfect “S” rating, that’s the highest feeling. Tactics are almost never required of us, it is only important that we defeat thousands of lifeless opponents.
While that’s a criticism, strangely enough, it’s the strength of the Pirate Warriors series. Let’s turn our heads off and enjoy the dynamic fighting styles of the many characters, then it’s kind of fun. And at the end of the day, it’s actually about that.
